Revenue Cycle Management 101, Part 1: Pre-Treatment Estimate

Since spring is coming early this year, now is a great time to start cleaning up your revenue cycle. This cycle, which begins when you schedule the appointment and ends when all billing has been collected for the treatment performed, often takes much longer than necessary (anything over 30 days is too long, in our opinion). A longer revenue cycle means decreased cash flow and increased write-offs for patients who don’t pay. Now is the time to shorten that revenue cycle, and we’d like to help you get started!

Part 1: Pre-Treatment Estimate

Let’s start early on in the revenue cycle, before the treatment is performed.Accurate pre-treatment estimates are perhaps the most important task in the revenue cycle for a few reasons:

  • Case acceptance
  • Patient payment at the time of treatment
  • A/R accuracy

Basically, by providing your patient with an accurate pre-treatment estimate, you’re setting yourself up for a nice, short revenue cycle!

So how do you provide an accurate pre-treatment estimate to your patients? In short, you must have verified their insurance eligibility and benefits prior to presenting the estimate. Unfortunately, as you well know, this is easier said than done! In order to get accurate information on exclusions and limitations means that you, or someone else in your office, must spend lots of time (up to 45 minutes) on the phone with insurance companies. It’s a hassle, but we promise you that it’s worth it, as it significantly decreases insurance billing problems and patient confusion over benefits.
